CMS County Wrestling Champions

Columbia Middle School wrestlers are marking a historic moment as their Santa Clara County championship banner arrives, honoring eighth grader Miriama Streb alongside siblings eighth grader Mateo Delos Santos and sixth grader Xyla Delos Santos, who captured county titles on Dec. 11, 2025, and became the first trio of champions in the program’s history.

Columbia competes in the Valley Junior High School Athletic League, where student-athletes face a rigorous season of competition. This milestone achievement places Columbia among the county’s top middle school wrestling teams and reflects a year defined by discipline, growth, and perseverance.

“I’m incredibly grateful for my coaches, Ernesto Ancona and Joe Caires, for their support,” Mateo said. “Being the first sibling duo to ever win county championships was really cool.”

Santa Clara County middle school wrestling follows a competitive pathway from league championships to sectional qualifiers before culminating in county finals, where only top finishers advance, making Columbia’s triple victory a rare and significant accomplishment.

Eighth grader Mateo Delos Santos earned his second consecutive Santa Clara County championship, becoming only the second wrestler in school history to secure back-to-back county titles. His dominant season included league, section, and county championships, completing what is known in wrestling as the Triple Crown for the second year in a row. Mateo remained undefeated throughout both his seventh- and eighth-grade seasons.

Sixth grader Xyla Delos Santos carved out a history of her own.

“I feel very proud and accomplished,” Xyla said. “I made history as the first girl to win sections and have my name on the banner, and the first sixth grader to win county at our school.”

Joining them on the podium, Streb secured a Santa Clara County championship, completing Columbia’s historic three-title finish and highlighting the strength of the program across multiple weight classes. Remarkably, Streb began wrestling just five months ago and went on to earn the Triple Crown in her first season.

All three student-athletes will compete in the Southern California Wrestling Association Youth Kids State Championships on March 14–15 in Fresno, as they continue building on the momentum of their historic county performances and pursue success at the next level.

“We are excited to celebrate the wonderful things happening at Columbia Middle School and to recognize the hard work of these students,” Sunnyvale School District Superintendent Gudiel R. Crosthwaite, Ph.D., said. “Their accomplishments reflect the dedication of our athletes, coaches, and school community. Congratulations to all three scholar-athletes on this outstanding achievement, and we wish them the very best as they represent our district at the State Championships.”
